The Wellness Movement Program: Mental Health Nudges for Healthcare Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic

AHA! Behavioral Design

Non-disruptive nudges that lowered perceived stress and lifted positive affect for hospital workers during the pandemic.

Target Segment: Hospital-based healthcare workers from DOH-retained (government) hospitals.

Challenge: How might we alleviate the chronic stress of hospital-based health professionals and supervisors to prevent or mitigate the development of mental health conditions by building individual resilience on and off duty?

BD Solution: In partnership with the DOH Health Promotion Bureau (DOH-HPB), AHA! BD designed non-disruptive tools: mindful breathing prompts (pre-duty); grounding behaviors during duty (audio-visual stress-ball exercises and scented stickers); gratitude behaviors post-duty (music playlist); and check-in behaviors for supervisors (group chat stickers).

Results: More consistent breathing and grounding practice (from 1-2x a week to 3-4x/5-6x a week); significant decrease in Perceived Stress (down 2.43-2.8 pts); significant increase in Positive Affect (up 3.5-3.6 pts) and work-related support (up 5.26 pts); high acceptability, with an overwhelming majority reporting relief and positive emotions.
