Prevention of Primary Teenage Pregnancy in Palawan: Behavioral Solutions for Young Females

AHA! Behavioral Design

Tools built with Roots of Health that raised young women's contraceptive confidence and opened conversations on consent and safe sex.

Target Segment: Female adolescents and young adults (ages 18-21).

Challenge: On contraceptive access — How might we increase young females' confidence in selecting their initial contraceptive choice and setting an appointment to visit the health clinic? On consent and safe sex — How might we increase conversations on consent and safe sex with their partner during pre-sex talks?

BD Solution: Together with Roots of Health, AHA! BD designed: Girl Power Planner (a planner highlighting matching contraceptives and scheduling when to get them); SIS! Kit (a hygiene pouch with a secret pocket to hide appointment cards and contraceptives); Safety Cube (a gamified infinity cube with prompts to open conversations on consent and safe sex).

Results: Increase in messaging (+0.6), visiting (+0.6), and appointment-setting (+0.5) among SIS! Kit users; Girl Power Planner use attributed to 22.9% of the change in condom use; SIS! Kit use attributed to 30.4% (condom) and 22.7% (female contraceptive) of the change; Safety Cube increased discussions on contraceptive use (+0.5) and consent before sex (+0.5) or any sexual activity (+0.8); ROH Center sourcing rose from 19.95% to 58.05%.
